01The mark / Primary

Threshold.

01

The IC monogram is built from three deliberate gestures: a slow arc that opens to the right (the C), an upright stroke (the I), and a single signal-blue point that marks the threshold between them. The point is the brand's smallest unit of meaning — it stands for the moment thinking begins.

Surface tests

The mark must hold without compromise on every primary surface. Note the threshold point is the only color event — even on signal blue, it remains.

Navy · #0C2340
Signal · #155A92
Bone · #EDE7DA

8 × 8 grid · unit = 100 r = 2.8u I axis · x = 7.7u

Construction notes

  • 01Drawn on an 8 × 8 unit grid; one unit equals 100 SVG units. The mark lives in the inner 8 × 8, with one unit of clear space on every side.
  • 02The C is a 280-unit-radius arc swept counterclockwise through 260°, opening cleanly to the right. Stroke = 88 units, round caps.
  • 03The I is a single vertical stroke on the x = 7.7u axis. Same stroke weight as the C — the two shapes carry equal optical weight.
  • 04The threshold point sits at (7.1u, 5.0u). Radius = 40 units. Signal blue, always — it is the only color event in the mark.
  • 05Clear space minimum equals the diameter of the threshold point on every side. Do not violate.
  • 06Minimum size: 18 px on screen, 6 mm in print. Below this, use the simplified favicon set in section 08.
02The mark / Variations

Three refinements. One recommended.

02

Each refinement keeps the C, the I, and the threshold point — but trades a different geometric assumption. We recommend Threshold. The other two are documented so the studio can revisit them if launch evidence calls for it.

Threshold

Open C. Upright I. The point sits in the gap.

Recommended · primary

The original direction, refined: the C opens 100° to the right, the I sits one threshold-diameter clear of the arc, and the blue point centers in the gap. The composition reads as architecture — a doorway with a single, deliberate marker at the threshold.

32
64
120
Reversed

Why this one. It is the only variant where the threshold point reads as the subject of the composition rather than a decoration on it. The etymology lives in the negative space, not in the strokes.

Aperture

Squared terminals. The point as a small architectural cap.

Alternate

Same skeleton, but every terminal is squared. The C reads as a portico; the I as a column. The threshold point becomes a small cap on top of the I rather than floating between forms. More architectural, more journal-of-architecture, slightly less warm.

32
64
120
Reversed

Trade-off. The point sitting on top of the I loses the threshold metaphor — it becomes ornament, not subject. Keep on file for any future architecture-adjacent line.

Cognate

The I closes the C. Single integrated mark. The point sits at the chord.

Alternate

A tighter monogram: the I becomes the chord that closes the C, forming a single integrated letterform. The threshold point sits exactly where the I meets the upper arc. Reads as one letter rather than two, and is the most compact at favicon size.

32
64
120
Reversed

Trade-off. Excellent at 16 px. At display scale the closure can read as a closed D rather than a C-and-I composition, and the "threshold" idea collapses into an apostrophe.

03Logo system / Wordmark lockups

A studio wordmark, three lockups, and an architecture for sub-brands.

03

The studio name is set in the brand serif. We show three wordmark treatments, three lockup formats, a Sift sub-brand lockup, and a generic sub-brand template that other lines will inherit when they are ready to be named publicly.

Sub-brand architecture

Sift is the first publicly named product. The relationship is endorsed, not absorbed: the product carries its own wordmark, and the studio sits one register quieter beneath it.

04Color system

A palette of seven. Six neutral, one signal.

04

The palette runs from paper to navy with two warm neutrals (bone, stone) and one cool one (warm gray-blue) between them. Signal blue is the only color that carries voltage — reserve it for actionable moments.

05Typography system

One serif family. One sans. One mono. Used with discipline.

05

The display and body voice both live in the serif — same family, different weights and sizes. The sans is reserved for labels, nav, and meta. The mono carries data, code, dictionary phonetics, and anything that earns its precision. System stacks are used so the brand renders identically without external loads.

Verdict chips · for Sift

Sift uses three verdicts. The names below are the only sanctioned externally-visible labels. Do not introduce variants without studio approval.

Do it now Do it later Skip it

Now carries the signal point. Later is the bone-toned middle. Skip is intentionally quieter than its neighbors — the system encourages a confident no.

08Voice & application principles

How to use the system. Six principles.

08

These aren't statements of identity. They're decisions you can make at 4 p.m. on a Tuesday without consulting anyone.

01

Lead with the etymology when introducing the brand cold.

The dictionary block is the single most effective first impression. It explains the company in eight words and earns the right to the serif headline that follows.

02

Sift is named publicly. Other product lines stay private until counsel clears them.

The studio can mention "other products in development." The studio does not name them, count them, or imply a number. The architecture in section 03 anticipates the day they're public — until then, leave the slot blank.

03

The navy carries itself. No apologetic gradients.

If the page feels too serious, the page is doing its job. Do not soften with washes, halos, or color blends. The single permitted optical event is the threshold point.

04

Signal blue is voltage. Use it where you want the eye to act.

One signal-blue event per screen is plenty. Two is the edge of acceptable. Three is a violation. Reserve it for CTAs, the threshold point, and the smallest critical state changes — never as a background, never as body text on navy.

05

Show your work. Hide your effort.

Numbered sections, visible hairline rules, dictionary phonetics, the construction grid — the system reveals its scaffolding deliberately. What it does not reveal is the iteration count, the deliberation, or the labor. Confidence is the absence of strain.

06

When in doubt, set it in the serif and let it breathe.

If you can't decide between a treatment, the answer is almost always: smaller, set in the brand serif, with more space around it. The system rewards restraint and punishes embellishment.

07

We are a studio, not a lab.

Studio implies craft, intentional output, and a ship cadence. Lab implies experimentation. We ship, we operate practices, we design intentionally — studio fits, lab does not. Use "studio" in every external surface. "Lab" is over-claimed in AI right now and carries a "we don't ship" connotation we have not earned and do not want. Brand-level rule, not a copy preference.

08

Describe what we do as practices, not experiments.

Sift is a practice we operate. Other products in development are practices we're shaping. Use practice, release, cadence, operating. Avoid pilot, experiment, hypothesis, beta-test in external copy — they signal the wrong register and undercut principle 07.

09What's not in the system

The boundaries. Hold these as tightly as the palette.

09

Negative space is part of the brand. The list below describes the moves the studio does not make. If a deliverable requires one, it requires a conversation first.

No colors outside the seven-color palette. No "near-paper," no "near-navy." If a use case demands one, escalate.
No third-party logos or icon libraries. The 12-icon starter set is the floor. We extend it, we don't replace it.
No emoji as a UI affordance. We have icons. Emoji in customer copy is permitted only where the customer used one first.
No exclamation points in customer copy. The brand is confident on the merits; punctuation does not need to carry it.
No hedging copy. “We believe,” “we hope,” “we apologize” — these undercut the brand. State the position; refund or fix without ceremony.
No naming the other product lines on any external surface. Names exist internally and stay there.
No product counts that imply the holding structure. “Our first public product” is permitted. “One of our five products” is not.
No founder credentials (CPA, prior roles, certifications) in Sift product marketing. The product earns the trust; the resume is for context conversations only.
No "lab" positioning. The entity is a studio, always — in copy, in chrome, in conversation. See principle 07. Brand-lock 2026-05-25.
10Version note / Changelog seed

v0.1 — the system goes private.
